2013 Pinot Gris

TECHNICAL NOTES

TASTING NOTES

This Pinot Gris was sourced exclusively from our own vineyard beside the market on Fourth Avenue in the Creek Shores appellation. We chose to harvest two blocks of the Market vineyard at different times. The first, western block which had the greatest risk from humidity was picked first in mid-September and the eastern block was picked almost two weeks later. Hand-picked, the grapes were crushed and destemmed before spending a couple of hours on the skins to extract added complexity and aromatic intensity. The grapes were then pressed and fermented and aged in stainless steel with fine lees to provide added richeness and creamy mouthfeel.

Enjoy over the next 3 years with white fish poached or baked with lemon butter, simple chicken dishes, creamy fresh cheeses, green vegetable or herb risotto or sweet garlic pork sausages. Serve lightly chilled rather than cold.

“A crisp, well balanced and fresh style of pinot gris, tending towards the Italian model rather than Alsatian with its brisk acids and slim structure. Some yeasty/lees character adds weight and depth on the palate, fleshing and broadening out the finish. Good to very good length. Nice stuff. Tasted September 2015. Value Rating: **”

“Stainless steel is the fresh preparer for Creek Shores fruit sourced from two blocks on one farm. Always picked early to retain sparkle and virility, with the intention of mitigating any chance for Botrytis. In 2013 the lactic and lees inflection is noticeably stronger, willing the fruit into creamy, temperate territory. What appears to have minimized is the soil aspect. This is as clean and sterile as ever was in the vigneron's stable. That is both a blessing and a curse, depending on what floats your aromatic boat. If the change in style is purposed, kudos to the decision. Drink 2015-2017. Tasted September 2015.”

“Fresh orchard fruit makes a first impression on the nose with notes of peach and apricot. Flavours on the palate are nicely concentrated on the light to mid-weight frame. Dry and savoury with bright acids and a notable mineral character. Lively and food friendly but enjoyable on its own. Tasted September 2015”

“This is aromatically understated but follows through with a nice sense of richness, some pinot gris weight and classic waxy flavours of fig, yellow pear, banana and vague spice. Its medium-full bodied, smooth yet braced by fine acidity, trailing a bitter lemon finish. Nicely dry, in an Alsatian mold. The length is very good. Tasted Sept 2015”
