2011 Chardonnay Sandstone Reserve



The Chardonnay from the almost 30 year old vines at the Sandstone Vineyard is consistently amongst the ripest fruit we harvest each year so the timing of harvest and the treatment of the grapes is of utmost importance if a truly great wine is to be produced. From Sandstone, we are blessed with wonderful mineral character and balanced acidity, even though potential alcohol can be quite high. In 2011 we might have enjoyed the perfect vintage for this wine. Rich yet refreshing, full bodied yet balanced. The wonderful complexity and great detailing is a result of Jean Pierre Colas’ masterful winemaking. Simply, ‘we are doing everything we can to capture the character of the Sandstone vineyard’.

Aged for 8 months in 20% new, 30% second use French oak from a variety of excellent coopers, this wine underwent 100% malolactic conversion. Minimal battonage was used in order to protect the freshness of the vintage and bottling took place in September 2012.

A warm, inviting nose of swirling spicy-creamy goodness that combines baked apple, poached pear, stoney minerals and just a touch of citrus. “From 29 year old vines, with a little bit of musque in the vineyard. Jean Pierre Colas, winemaker here, arrived in 2000 from the head winemaker position in Laroche, Chablis. Fresh and subtly nutty with white peach and a hint of spice. Textured, rich and ripe, but showing good balance.”

“The 2011 13th Street Sandstone Reserve Chardonnay, sourced from nearly 30 year old wines, which afterwards was partially aged in new/used French Oak barrels for 8-9 months; has seductive aromas of creamy butter and vanilla on the nose and pear, gooseberry, butter and vanilla on the palate. It is a medium bodied, extra-dry, integrated wine; BALANCED with refreshing acidity and a long, mineral finish. Enjoy this wine on its own; drink for the next 3-5+ years (cork enclosure). My impression: BEAUTIFUL, 91-92 pts - recommended for its quality.”
